Asthma is a long-term inflammatory disease of the airways of the lungs. Asthma is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors.[4] Environmental factors include exposure to air pollution and allergens. Asthma is marked by inflammation of the bronchial tubes, with or without secretions inside the tubes. People with asthma have symptoms when the airways tighten which is called as bronchospasm , inflame, or fill with mucus.

Symptoms

Symptoms may be shortness of breath , difficulty in breathing , tightness in chest , wheezing or whistling sound , occasional cough which is more comman in allergic bronchitis , with or without secretions .

Trigger Factors

These may vary from exposure to dust , pollens , envoirnmental pollutions , changes in envoirnment esp damp or cold weather , physical exercise ,certain medictions esp aspirin , food like cold drinks , ice cream , sour or oily food , suppressed emotions , anxiety or stress , etc .

In modern medicine , generally treatment is aimed at giving symptomatic relief . Medicines like bronchodilators which will expand the constricted airways , oral or inhaled corticosteroids which will temporarily relief the inflammations , anti allergics which will reduce the allergic response , anti tussives or expectoratants for cough or secretions are given respectively .
